WHWN Applauds Angelina Jolie's Decision for Double Mastectomy

On May 14, 2013, Associated Press reports that Angelina Jolie wrote in a New York Time column, titled "My Medical Choice." "My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer," wrote Jolie. If you recall, her mother died of breast cancer at 56 years of age; a disease that has a high mortality rate.

Jolie went public to encourage other women to be proactive about the disease.  "I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer," she continued.

Her partner, Brad Pitt, had the wonderful words of encouragement:
"Having witnessed this decision firsthand, I find Angie's choice, as well as so many others like her, absolutely heroic," Pitt, 49, tells The London Evening Standard. "I thank our medical team for their care and focus. All I want for is for her to have a long and healthy life, with myself and our children. This is a happy day for our family."
Who's Hot? & Who's Not! applauds Jolie in her brave proactive decision and to continue helping and encouraging others.
